The short version: the app listens while you practise, to show you what your voice is doing. It doesn't record anything unless you choose to keep a recording, and it never sends anything to us. What it remembers about your practice — including the numbers it measures from your voice, and any recordings you keep — stays on your phone.

Who we are

Trans Voice Coach is run by Joseph McCleary, United Kingdom. For data protection purposes we are the data controller. You can contact us at joemccleary0@gmail.com.

What the app keeps, and where

The app keeps a short note of each practice session on your phone: when it started and ended, how long you practised, whether you finished or left early, and which exercises it showed you. Where a session included live measurement, that note also includes the numbers the app measured from your voice during it — the target range it set for that exercise and how long you held it, and, for the short check-in passage, the median pitch and resonance it heard and how much they varied. These are numbers derived from your voice, not a recording of it — see "The microphone" below. It also remembers which articles you've opened, the time of your daily reminder if you've set one, which welcome screens and topic introductions you've seen, and your display choices (light or dark, and how Fish Baby shows the pitch ranges). If you play Fish Baby, the pitch game, it remembers the furthest zone you've reached, the creatures and secrets you've found, and what she's wearing. If you choose to keep any recordings, it keeps those too — see "Recordings you choose to keep" below.

That's all of it. It is stored only on your phone. We don't have a copy, and there is no server for it to be sent to.

The app turns off Android's automatic backup, so this doesn't get copied into your Google account either. The trade-off is that your practice history doesn't move with you to a new phone.

The microphone

The app asks for microphone access the first time it needs it — either the first practice session or the short check-in during setup, whichever you reach first. It listens only while that screen is open: never in the background, and never between sessions.

While it's listening, the app measures things like the pitch and resonance of your voice, live, on the phone itself, so it can show you a number or keep you inside a target range. Unless you've chosen to keep a recording, nothing you say is recorded. In practice sessions, the check-in and the pitch game, no audio file is created, not even briefly — each moment of sound is measured and then discarded, and the app keeps only the resulting numbers, the same way it already keeps a note of which exercise you did. Nothing about your voice is ever uploaded; the measuring happens entirely on your phone and stays there.

Recordings you choose to keep

You can choose to keep a recording of yourself reading the app's short daily passage, so that later you can play it back next to a newer one and hear how your voice has changed. This is off unless you turn it on: either by ticking "Keep a recording of this" before the first reading when you set up the app, or by recording one yourself on the "Your recordings" screen (reached from Progress or Settings).

- What's kept. Only readings of that passage, and only ones you've chosen to keep — your first reading, and at most one later reading for each point along the way (four weeks, three months, six months, a year, and yearly after that). Keeping a new one for the same point replaces the old one. Before a recording is saved, the silence at the start and end is trimmed and its volume is evened out so two recordings can be compared fairly; nothing else about it is changed. The app also notes each recording's date and length. - Where. As audio files in the app's own private storage on your phone. Other apps can't read them, they don't appear in your photos or music, and because the app turns off Android's automatic backup they aren't copied to your Google account. They are never uploaded — the app has no way to send them anywhere — and the copy of your data you can take from Settings lists them but doesn't include the audio. - Playing them. A recording only ever plays when you press play. The app may offer to play your first recording next to a new one when your check-ins show your voice has changed; it never plays one on its own. Anyone who can open the app on your unlocked phone could also play them, which is worth knowing if you share your phone. - Deleting them. You can delete any recording, or all of them, on the "Your recordings" screen. Settings → Delete everything deletes them too, and so does uninstalling the app.

A recording of your voice in an app like this can say something about you that you might not want shared, which is why keeping one is entirely your choice, and why they never leave your phone.

If you say no to the microphone permission, the app tells you it can't run a session without it and shows you how to turn it on later in your phone's Settings if you change your mind. You can look around the rest of the app — articles, Progress, Settings — without ever granting it.

Your daily reminder

If you choose to set one, the app schedules a daily notification on your phone. It is created and delivered by your phone, not sent from us. It says "Ten minutes? Whenever you're ready." and never mentions voice training or gender.

Android shows the app's name above every notification, and on the lock screen too unless your phone is set to hide notification content there. The app can't change that, which is why the reminder is off until you turn it on. You can turn it off at any time in Settings.

What we don't do

If you email us

The app has a "Send feedback" option in Settings. It doesn't send anything itself: it opens your own email app with a message you can read, change and choose to send. If you send it, or email us any other way, we receive your email address and whatever you wrote, in an ordinary email inbox. We use it only to read and reply to you, and we delete it within a year unless you ask us to keep talking. You can ask us to delete it sooner at any time.

Deleting everything

Settings → Delete everything removes every practice note, every recording you've kept, every article mark, your reminder, your Fish Baby progress and your settings from the phone, straight away and permanently. Uninstalling the app does the same.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have rights to access, correct, delete and receive a copy of your personal data. Because everything the app keeps is on your own phone and we hold nothing, you can see it, delete it and take a copy of it yourself from the app; if you'd like to ask us anything, email joemccleary0@gmail.com.

If you think we've handled your data badly, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk. We'd rather you told us first, but you don't have to.

Children and young people

Trans Voice Coach is for people aged 16 and over, and the Play Store listing is set to match. The app collects nothing that leaves the phone from anyone, of any age.

Changes to this policy

If a later version of the app offers an account or backs anything up, this policy will change first, and the app will tell you before the change takes effect rather than quietly updating this page. Previous versions are available on request.

A note on what this app is for

Trans Voice Coach is a practice tool, not medical care and not a substitute for a speech and language therapist. If your voice hurts, or feels tired or rough for more than a few days, please stop practising and speak to a therapist or your GP.
