How long this usually takes

Longer than you'd like, and here's roughly how long.

Roughly three to six months before you can make the voice you want reliably, in a quiet room, while you're concentrating. Then another six to twelve months before it's the voice that comes out by itself: when you're tired, laughing, arguing, or picking up the phone without thinking.

That's a long time, and there's no way round it. If someone promises you a few weeks, be suspicious.

But most people notice the first real change within about six weeks, which is sooner than they expect.

Little and often wins

Ten to fifteen minutes most days will get you further than two hours at the weekend. That's how motor learning works. Your voice is a set of muscles and habits, and habits come from how often you do something, not how long you do it for.

It's also why the sessions don't get longer. Getting better means doing more within your ten minutes, not stretching them to twenty.

Progress isn't a straight line

Some days it clicks and some days it's gone, and a bad day often follows a good one. Sleep, illness, stress, dehydration and how much you've already talked that day all move your voice around a lot. One bad Tuesday doesn't mean much.

So don't read too much into a single session. Look back over weeks, not days.

Plateaus happen, and they end

Most people hit a few weeks where nothing seems to move. Usually the easy gains are done and the slower work is going on underneath: you're getting more consistent, and that's the kind of progress that's hardest to feel.

The people who get there are rarely the ones who trained hardest. They're the ones who kept coming back.

This is practice, not medical care. Keep it comfortable: if your throat feels tight, sore or tired, stop for today. Read Looking after your voice, and see a speech and language therapist if hoarseness lasts more than a few days.
